OF DISNEY AND CREATURES
Julian’s body was shaking with delight and his face was alight with total joy as he watched the commercial. It was for Disney World. Martina and I had called him into the room to see the new television spot for his favorite place in the world. The idea of an eighteen-year-old being so excited by a Disney commercial may seem odd at first, but this is Julian and ever since he was old enough to know what the Magic Castle represented, all things Disney have enthralled him.
In fact, just before rushing into the den to view the commercial, he was back in our home office, on the Internet, searching for information on and images of characters from Disney animated films. He possesses an expansive and deep reservoir of knowledge regarding Disney animated movies. There are the “Classics,” such as Snow White, Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp, to name a few. Then there is the more recent heading of “Renaissance” which features titles such as The Lion King, Mulan and Aladdin. Julian knows all the characters, major and minor, the actors who give voice to the stories, and the details of the respective soundtracks. This is his area of expertise.
As I’ve noted before, persons with autism often have specific areas of intense concentration and interest. For Julian, it’s Disney and animals; more on the latter a little later. Not a day goes by that Julian doesn’t engage us in some form of dialogue centered around the endlessly entertaining characters of these movies, be they heroes, villains or comic sidekicks. He knows them all and has an extensive DVD collection to support his interest. His favorite of all-time is The Lion King. Often he will call out to Martina and me, asking us to come up to his room, so that he might show us an array of Disney gold.
